frequently asked questions.

Volunteering at Lifted Hospice is a meaningful and rewarding way to bring comfort, joy, and companionship to patients and families. Whether you have an hour or a heart full of kindness to give, your presence makes a difference.

Anyone with a heart to serve! We welcome adults, young adults, and mature teens who want to offer kindness and support. No medical experience is required—just a willingness to be present and compassionate.

Hospice care is about more than just medical support—it’s about love, dignity, and human connection. Volunteers are a vital part of our mission, helping us provide personalized and heartfelt care to every patient and family. While Medicare requires hospices to include volunteers in their care model, we believe volunteers are essential in making every moment count.

Volunteers bring hope and companionship to patients, offering a listening ear, sharing stories, reading aloud, playing music, or simply sitting in peaceful presence. Families also find comfort in knowing that someone cares.

There are many ways to serve, and you can choose what feels right for you:

  • Spending time with patients — talking, reading, listening to music, or just being present
  • Helping families —offering support, running small errands, or lending a hand
  • Sharing your gifts —music, art, pet therapy, or helping with our Life Review program
  • Assisting behind the scenes — helping with clerical work, events, or outreach

To ensure the best experience for both volunteers and patients, we ask that volunteers:

  • Complete our volunteer training to understand hospice care and their role
  • Undergo a background check (for patient-related roles)
  • Have a compassionate heart and a respect for patient dignity

We work with you to ensure the role you choose is the best fit for your gifts and availability!

All volunteers complete a comprehensive yet simple training to ensure they feel comfortable and supported. Training includes:

  • Understanding hospice care & the role of a volunteer
  • How to communicate with patients & families
  • Maintaining healthy emotional boundaries
  • Self-care and coping strategies

Training is available in a weekend session or flexible individual format to fit your schedule. Ongoing guidance is always available.

As much or as little as you’re able! Whether you have a few hours a month or a little time each week, every moment makes an impact. We will work with your schedule to find the best fit.

Yes! Many nursing schools and programs recognize hospice volunteer work as valuable healthcare experience. While specific requirements vary by school, hospice volunteering can:

  • Fulfill healthcare-related volunteer requirements
  • Provide hands-on experience in patient care, communication, and emotional support
  • Help strengthen your nursing school application with meaningful experience

We recommend checking with your nursing school or program advisor to confirm how your hours can be applied. We’re happy to provide documentation of your volunteer service to support your application.
